Our Story of Faith
The story of St. Joseph Catholic Church is one of humble beginnings, steadfast faith, and a community that has grown together across generations. It began in 1873, when Bishop William Gross of Savannah visited Athens and met with roughly ten Catholic families—a small but devoted group who dreamed of having a parish to call their own. Their prayers were answered in 1881 when a modest wooden building was purchased for $2,000, becoming Athens’ first Catholic church. For nearly four decades, visiting priests celebrated Mass—sometimes only once a month—yet the faithful gathered, and the community endured. A new chapter opened in 1911 with the arrival of Fr. Harry Clark, our first resident priest, whose tireless efforts raised funds from as far as Philadelphia and New York. On March 30, 1913, a new church on Prince Avenue was dedicated, graced by 18 magnificent stained glass windows crafted in Germany, each depicting a moment in the life of Christ.
The decades that followed brought continued growth and deepening roots. The Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart helped establish St. Mary’s Hospital in 1937 and opened a parochial school in 1949. In the 1960s, when Sacred Heart Parish closed, its African-American parishioners were welcomed into the St. Joseph family—a moment of unity that strengthened our community. Under Fr. William Calhoun, our first African-American pastor, a bold 1982 campaign raised an extraordinary $800,000, leading to a new school in 1984 and a church dedication in 1985. By 2005, under Fr. David McGuinness, our growing parish expanded again, opening a new school and multi-purpose building on Epps Bridge Parkway in 2012.
Over more than a century, 21 pastors have shepherded this parish. Today, St. Joseph is home to over 2,000 active families—a vibrant, multicultural reflection of the Athens we love. And our story continues. Through our current Sanctuary campaign, we are building a new church where our cherished stained glass windows will once again shine as they have for generations. From ten families to thousands, from a small wooden building to a thriving community of faith—this is St. Joseph, and this is our home. Our Patron Saint
St. Joseph is remembered for his quiet strength, deep compassion, and unwavering faith—a man who chose mercy over judgment and opened his heart completely to God’s plan as husband to Mary and earthly father to Jesus. His life of humble devotion, selfless love, and faithful service makes him a model for us all, honored as the patron of fathers, workers, the universal Church, and those seeking a peaceful death. At our parish, we celebrate his spirit through the annual St. Joseph Award, recognizing members who embody the virtues he lived so beautifully: joy, generosity, and quiet initiative in service to others.
